Polar Light Lantern
The Polar Night Lantern is my first mural painting made with lime and pigments. The wall is located in a parking hall in the city center of Imatra, Finland, and it is part of a large entity of six mural paintings by different artists. It is not a fresco nor exactly a fresco secco, because there is no plaster underneath. An ordinary concrete wall was first watered with lime water and then a layer of lime porridge was applied. Lime becomes white when dryed. The only ingredients of this technique are water, lime and pigment powders. I have represented only real species of flowers before, but this time I wanted to imagine a new kind of flower. The Polar Night Lantern lightens the darkness and it is the only flower that is in bloom during winter in the arctic.
Kaamoslyhty on ensimmäinen kalkkimaalaukseni. Seinä löytyy parkkihallista Imatran keskustasta ja se on osa suurempaa, kuuden erilaisen seinämaalauksen kokonaisuutta, kuudelta eri taiteilijalta. Alla on tavallinen betoniseinä, jolle levitettiin aluksi kalkkivettä ja sitten se pohjustettiin kalkkipuurolla. Tekniikkaan käytettävät raaka-aineet ovat sammutettu kalkkijauho, vesi sekä pigmenttijauheet. Olen aikaisemmin maalannut seinille olemassaolevia kukkalajeja, mutta tällä kertaa halusin tehdä kuvitteellisen kukan, joka voisi kukkia keskellä talvea ja valaista arktisen alueen pimeää kaamosta.
Jesus in the Night
Jesus in the Night is made using real traditional fresco technique. It is a small experiment made horizontally in a wooden crib. The crib is about 6 cm deep, because there are so many different kinds of layers of lime mortar underneath the pigments.
Jeesus yössä on toteutettu aidolla ja perinteisellä freskotekniikalla. Se on kokeilu, joka on tehty vaakatasossa puiseen laariin, joka on noin 6 cm syvä, koska siinä on useita erityyppisiä kalkkilaastikerroksia.
Tussock Cottongrass
Tussock Cottongrass is a depiction of delicate cotton-like flowers that grow in the swamplands of Lapland. Although it is a uniform picture, it is composed of glimpses of single flowers that are like pieces of memories. I wanted to explore the individuality of the tufts and the wind that is rendered by movement in different directions. The white shades in the interior design of the room recur in the pure white of the painting and the off-white of the wall.
Tupasvillat on taulumainen kuvaus lapin soilla kasvavista herkistä pumpulimaisista kukista. Vaikka kuva on yhtenäinen, se koostuu yksittäisten villojen häivähdyksistä, muistojen palasista. Minua kiinnostivat tupasvillojen yksilöllisyys ja niitä puhaltava tuuli, joka maalauksessa näkyy eri suuntiin kulkevana liikkeenä. Huoneen sisustuksen valkoiset pinnat toistuvat maalauksessa niin seinämaalin vaaleassa sävyssä kuin maalauksessa käytetyssä valkoisessa akryylissä.
Flowering
Flowering is entirely composed of different arabesques that are based on the decoration in a palace in Istambul. The arabesques of the original istambulian painting are attached to thin spirals and they cover the wall evenly forming a regular pattern. I wanted to use the arabesques in a different way. They are related to each other quite randomly and they continue each other’s movements. They grow, they bloom and some of them are even flying around. Occasionally they lose their proportions and stretch as if blown by a wind and end up returning to their own shape again. The main neutral colors, blue and warm grey are locally contrasted with touches of bright colors. The gradient accentuates continuity and limitlessness in the neverending possibilities of their combination.
Kukoistus koostuu kokonaan erilaisista arabeskeista, joiden malleina olen käyttänyt istanbulilaisessa palatsissa sijaitsevan seinämaalauksen arabeskeja. Istanbulissa arabeskit ovat kiinni säännöllisissä spiraalikuvioissa täyttäen tasaisesti koko seinän, mutta maalauksessani halusin käsitellä niitä toisella tavalla. Ne kiinnittyvät toisiinsa melko vapaasti ja jatkavat toistensa liikkeitä, kasvavat, versovat ja jotkut jopa lentävät. Ne menettävät paikoin omat mittasuhteensa venähtäen ikään kuin tuulen tuivertamina palatakseen jälleen omaan muotoonsa. Neutraalit pääsävyt, sininen ja savenharmaa saavat vastapainokseen pieniä aavistuksia kirkkaista väreistä. Liukuvärimäinen väritys korostaa jatkuvuutta ja rajattomuutta, joka liittyy arabeskien yhdistelyn lukemattomiin eri mahdollisuuksiin.
Tigerlily
Tigerlily is a combination of individual flowers photographed from different angles and directions. Like ornaments they form together a decoratively shaped branch. A warm scale of colors and a cold blue create a strong contrast. My goal was to get a grandiloquent impression with soft and smooth brush strokes. The entire painting is reflected in a large mirror which transforms it into a symmetrical ornament.
Maalauksessa Ruskoliljat on eri kulmista otettuja lähikuvia eri ruskoliljayksilöistä. Kompositiossa pyrin koristeellisuuteen – kukat toimivat kuin ornamentit jotka kiinnittyvät toisiinsa terälehtien kärjistä. Punertava ja valoisa värimaailma tuo huoneeseen lämpöä. Kylmä sininen väri lehdissä ja varsissa luo raikkaan kontrastin lämpimälle oranssille. Maalauksessa pyrin rajuun näyttävyyteen, joka kuitenkin toteutuu pehmeällä ja herkällä jäljellä. Seinämaalaus heijastuu oikealla olevaan peilikaappiin kokonaisuudessaan, jolloin se kaksinkertaistuu ja siitä tulee symmetrinen, kuin ornamentti.

Flowering Apple Tree
Flowering Apple Tree is all about the emerging of summer during the last moments of spring. My model is a real and familiar apple tree that I’ve known since my childhood. It has experienced tough times, but it is strong, full of life and it brings up delicate but big flowers over and over again. It hides fable little secrets which can be perceived only now and then, one by one.
Kukkiva omenapuu käsittelee orastavan kesän ja loppukevään tunnelmaa. Käytin lähtökohtana ja mallina oikeata yksilöä, Huvitusta, joka elää lapsuuteni maisemissa. Se on kovia kokenut, vahva, mutta herkkiä kukkia pukkaava ja elämää pursuava puu. Se kätkee sisäänsä satumaisia salaisuuksia, joista voi ensisilmäyksellä havaita vain murto-osan.
Lumberjacks
The theme of the painting Lumberjacks is related to its environment, Mäntyharju, Finland. There is a long historical tradition of timber rafting in the area. By combining elements of today and past, I tried to tell a timeless story. My aim is to portray very different kinds of men, individual characters, taking a break from their work in a small moment of peace.
Seinämaalauksessa kuvaan vanhanaikaista tukinuittoteemaa hyödyntäen samalla luonnon kauneutta ja moderneja asusteita. Mäntyharjulla, tämän talon ympäristössä, on vahva uittoperinne. Menneen maailman, nykyajan, suomalaisen kulttuurin ja jopa eri vuodenaikojen yhdistelyllä pyrin kuvailemaan ihmisiä tietyissä olosuhteissa. Kaikkiaan seinämaalaus on kuvaus erilaisista hahmoista ja pieni tuokiokuva tauosta, lomasta.
Cranesbill
For the theme of this floral painting I chose the wood cranesbill, which can be seen everywhere in Finland. Its colour varies from pink to cold violet. Unlike the orchid, the wood cranesbill is a small, thin and sensitive plant. I represented it from as many points of view as possible and I used different phases of flowering.
Tämä kukka-aiheinen maalaus kuvaa metsäkurjenpolvea. Sitä esiintyy koko Suomessa ja sen väri vaihtelee pinkistä kylmään violettiin. Toisin kuin orkidea, metsäkurjenpolvi on pieni, siro ja herkänoloinen kasvi. Kuvasin sitä mahdollisimman monesta eri näkökulmasta ja eri kukintavaiheita hyödyntäen.
Orchids
Hotel Bloom! in Brussels and The European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) made a deal: 287 young artists from art schools from around Europe decorated a hotel room each with a fresco. I participated in this project and painted a wall with pink orchids. Joy of living, bright colours, fertility, decorativity and a balance between peace of mind and baroque style of massiveness were the themes that I wanted to bring out in the picture.
Brysselin Hotel Bloom! ja ELIA (The European League of Institutes of the Arts) tekivät sopimuksen: 287 nuorta taiteilijaa taidekouluista ympäri Eurooppaa saivat kukin koristella yhden hotellihuoneen freskolla. Osallistuin projektiin ja maalasin seinälle pinkkejä orkideoja. Elämänilo, kirkkaat värit, hedelmällisyys, koristeellisuus ja mielenrauhan sekä barokkimaisen massiivisuuden välinen tasapaino toimivat teemoina, joita halusin tuoda esille kuvan kautta.
